The new system, developed with Sonitus Systems and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), makes environmental data instantly accessible to everyone.

You can explore it right now at 👉 limerick.sonitussystems.com.

A Cleaner, Quieter Limerick

The new online map brings together live data from 29 monitoring devices installed at 15 locations around Limerick. Each site measures air quality and/or noise levels – helping residents, schools, community groups, and local businesses see what’s happening in their area.

Many of the monitors are located along Active Travel routes, such as Ballinacurra Road, Canal Bank, Childers Road, and the Dublin Road near Parkway Roundabout. This means Limerick City and County Council can now study how walking and cycling routes influence both air and noise quality, while helping people make healthier, greener travel choices.

Other sites include well-known local spots like People’s Park, Lock Quay, Castletroy, and Lough Gur.

What the Dashboard Shows

Each dot on the interactive map represents a live monitor. Click on any location and you’ll see the Air Quality Index for Health (AQIH), which gives an easy-to-understand colour-coded score for local conditions – from ‘Good’ to ‘Very Poor’. You can also look back over the past 24 hours or view historical data to see how air quality changes over time.

The system combines results from both the EPA and the Council, creating one simple, easy-to-use view for the public.

Why It Matters

Clean air and quiet spaces are essential to our health and wellbeing. Fine particles in the air – known as PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 – can travel deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Long-term exposure is linked to heart and lung disease, and even cancer. Another pollutant, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), comes mainly from traffic and can cause short-term breathing problems and long-term respiratory illnesses.

By making this data publicly available, Limerick City and County Council is giving everyone the tools to understand local environmental conditions and make informed decisions – whether that means choosing a safer walking route, planning outdoor exercise, or supporting policy for cleaner transport.

Listening to the City

As well as measuring air quality, the Council also monitors noise. This helps build a picture of how everyday sounds – from traffic to public spaces – affect urban life. The information feeds into Noise Action Plans and Strategic Noise Mapping, which local authorities must carry out every five years.

Importantly, this data doesn’t just identify noisy areas; it also helps to protect quiet areas such as Canal Bank, Castletroy Greenway, Lough Gur, and People’s Park – ensuring that peaceful, natural spaces are preserved for residents and visitors alike.

The system uses Sonitus Systems DM30 Dustsens monitors to measure air quality and Sonitus Cloud software to process and display the data in real time. Together, they deliver reliable, high-resolution environmental data that’s easy for the public to access and for Council teams to manage. Every few seconds, the monitors collect and transmit information to the online dashboard, where it’s automatically updated. There’s no waiting for reports or spreadsheets – what you see is what’s happening right now.

By opening up environmental data to the public, Limerick City and County Council is setting a new standard for transparency. The dashboard gives everyone – from schoolchildren to scientists – the same level of access as environmental engineers.

This initiative is part of a growing focus on “data for people”, where communities are invited to see and understand the same information that shapes policy. In time, the insights gathered will help guide decisions on planning, transport, and public health across the region.

The Limerick dashboard is available to everyone at limerick.sonitussystems.com. You can explore local air quality, listen to how quiet your neighbourhood is, and learn more about how everyday activities shape our shared environment.

Sonitus Systems offers both the hardware and software for a range of environmental parameters on a continual basis, with real-time information available through our Sonitus Cloud dashboard.
