Environmental Monitoring Trends for 2024

Embracing Creating the Future: Cloud-Based, AI-Driven, and Community-Focused

In 2023, Sonitus Systems reached an important milestone with in excess of 5,000 environmental monitors globally now connected to the Sonitus Cloud (read more here: https://www.sonitussystems.com/insights/sonitus-cloud-modernising-environmental-monitoring/). Leveraging the power of cloud technology in environmental monitoring has contributed to the progress, innovation and scaleable growth of Sonitus Systems over the past decade. With over 5,000 environmental monitors now connected globally to the Sonitus Cloud, the platform ensures the seamless integration of a range of important environmental metrics, including noise, air quality, and vibration data. This integration ensures continuous, reliable monitoring with virtually no downtime, setting new standards for environmental compliance. Reliable monitoring leads to reliable data, and reliable data can be optimised through the use of artificial intelligence.

AI in environmental monitoring is no longer a future possibility, it is an exciting reality.  Sonitus Systems’ Automated Noise Identification (ANI) technology, leveraging AI, has revolutionised environmental noise management by autonomously identifying noise sources. This technological leap forward demonstrates the potential of AI to not only manage large volumes of environmental data but to extract meaningful insights from them. Local Governments and Community Engagement

The innovative use of technology by local governments and project owners for community outreach is gaining momentum – learn more: https://www.sonitussystems.com/insights/environmental-monitoring-for-smart-cities/.

Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency’s recent upgrade to their airquality.ie website, operated through the Sonitus Cloud, is a shining example (https://www.sonitussystems.com/insights/sonitus-systems-epa-launches-updated-air-quality-website/). This platform, providing air quality forecasts across Ireland, showcases how technology can be used to inform and engage communities, allowing them to make informed decisions about their health and environment.

Trends Shaping the Future

Reflecting on insights from COP28 and IMD’s report on ‘Sustainability trends shaping corporate priorities in 2024’, several key trends emerge including corporate accountability in climate action. It is increasingly clear that in order to track State and individual corporate progress on climate action, there will be an even greater need for continuous, accurate measurement and reporting on air quality and other environmental factors.

Interestingly, the concept of ‘nature intelligence’ is gaining traction. According to the IMD report, with over 50,000 companies facing new regulatory disclosure requirements on their environmental impact, the demand for nature-related data and insights is surging.

And we welcome this, within Sonitus HQ, we see the future of environmental monitoring not just through the lens of technological advancement; it is about creating a healthy and sustainable planet for all.
